How To Avoid RSI - 5 Tips for Geeks

Posted by nick in September 2nd 2008

RSI - Repetitive Strain Injury can cause permanent damage and leave you with health problems that will severely impair you for the rest of you’re life!

One out of ever ten adults suffer from RSI, the statistics are even higher for people aged 18 to 30 years of age, in this ever increasingly connected world the problem is set to increase and you could be the next victim, learn the 5 tips so you can avoid a painful debilitating health problem that could impact you for life.

The five tips have been developed from the best health professionals and experts in this field world wide, they have accumulated years of experience and knowledge to best advise you on prevention methods before it’s too late.

This article and tips included are focusing on competitor RSI as that is the most common cause of RSI injuries, we will look at both what causes the problem and prevention methods.

The five main features are as follows:
1. Body position and posture
2. A Proper Work Station
3. Taking Regular Breaks
4. Diet and Environment
5. Long term habits

These five keys do relate and affect each other. Therefore it will not work just by following 3 or 4 of these points, they interrelate, so be sure to read and follow each one and think about how they are all working to preventing RSI.

1. Body Position and Posture
You need to have your body in a relaxed position so your are putting as less a strain as possible on your bodies key pressure points, make sure you’re hands are resting on the table or keyboard pad, make sure you are not relaxed too much, the best rule to ensure this is to make sure your chin is behind you’re chest and eyes are level with the top of the screen.

2. A Proper Work Station
Like anything in life you need the proper equipment to get the job done, not just to work efficiently but to also save you’re body from pain and injury - which will lead to RSI, if you spend hours upon hours at the computer then investing in a good chair and desk is a no-brainer! Make sure your computer is a good one with a big screen and a keyboard that is easy to use.

3. Taking Regular Breaks
This is the most ignored aspect of RSI and will also make the most impact, taking regular breaks will not only help prevent RSI but will also refresh you’re mind and body and get you more aware of you’re posture and surroundings, how are you ever going to consciously make designs to prevent RSI if you don’t refresh your mind and body.

4. Diet and Environment
This seems not as important as the other points but it actually is, when you are not eating well or gulping back sugar energy drinks you are not going to be motivated with looking after you’re health and RSI issues. You’re environment also plays a part in RSI, if you are not getting fresh air, with good room circulation then you will no doubt not feel health and be aware of RSI problems.

5. Long Term Habits
Your general lifestyle when not at the computer also has a big impact on this likelihood of getting RSI. If you don’t have regular holidays, exercise regularly and eat well then this will all contribute to getting RSI. Look after your temple that is you’re body, you only get one of them!

I hope these 5 essential tips on RSI have been useful, it’s so much easier to prevent RSI before it takes hold, by following these simple steps you can avoid being another victim of this alarming modern trend.
