An addiction to Sudoku, as many of we geeks have, is a prime opportunity to train your body as well as your mind.
All you basically need is your computer, your favourite online Sudoku puzzle (I like the Sudoku application for Facebook) and an area next to your desk big enough to do pushups. (Some other Sudoku sites are here, here and here.)
The other thing you will need is a stopwatch/alarm that sets can be set to go off every 30 seconds. You can download a free stopwatch alarm application which is perfect for this here.
Now open up a new Sudoku puzzle. To get the most out of this you should opt to go for a puzzle that is moderately challenging for your own level - a puzzle that would usually take you longer than 5 minutes to solve. With the added stress of a timer and the workout you are going to be doing, this will usually take you a LOT longer than it normally would.
Next, you need to set your timer to sound an alarm every 30 seconds. With the 1Time2.0 application just set the timer to 30 seconds and make sure the “Repeat” checkbox is ticked. Your computer will sound the alarm every 30 seconds.
Now do some stretching and your usual warmup.
Press start on your timer and go back to your Sudoku puzzle.
You have 30 seconds to fill in the first number.
If you can complete any part of the puzzle within that 30 seconds, then congratulation, you have earned yourself another 30 seconds to solve the next number.
If you are unable to fill in any box on the puzzle within 30 seconds then it’s time to hit the floor.
That means 30 seconds of constant pushups - the point is to go pretty hard. Keep the intensity as hard as you can push it (which is why it is important to warm up).
At the end of 30 seconds, when the alarm goes off, you have 30 seconds to try again to solve another number in the puzzle.
And so the game continues like this until you have solved the puzzle.
Now, you should mix this up with more than just pushups. Squats, situps, leg raises, lunges and single leg calf raises are all exercises that don’t require any gym equipment and can be done in your office or bedroom or wherever your computer is. Whichever you do, keep on a constant load for the 30 seconds you are doing them.
The added stress of the timer and being flustered and sweaty as you are trying to solve the suzzle, means that these workouts combined with Sudoku usually get your heart rate going and keep it their for a lot longer than it would normally take you to complete a puzzle.
Work your body, work your mind!
