Posted on September 17th, 2008 in Healthy Lifestyle

There are a lot of health myths circulating that are probably hurting your own efforts at staying healthy. Here are a few of the more obvious ones, but these certainly are not the only ones.

If It’s Natural, It’s Healthy – This gets people into a lot of trouble when they are trying to maintain a diet that regulates their sugar and fat intake. It isn’t helped by a lot of advertising by lobbyists for certain indutries who put out mislead advertising too. For example, just because fruit juice is “natural” doesn’t mean it should have a regular place in a healthy diet. It is full of sugar, but minus the fibre it has when it is in its whole fruit form.

Children Get “Puppy Fat” – This is a common excuse that parents make for their overweight children. In fact it is highly likely that overweight children will NOT grow out of their puppy fat when they reach adolesence or adulthood. It is also a time in which you should be instilling godo exercise and eating habits in children so that they don’t have to continually fight obesity.

Long Periods of Cardio Are The Best Way to Drop Fat – Don’t get us wrong, cardio is great and it should be part of any good exercise regime. But it is most definitely not the best way to drop body fat. Study after scientific study has concluded that interval training is the best way to drop fat and improve performance. That means that a series of short and intense workouts will help you far more than jogging for an hour.  Here are a couple of good resources on interval training  that you might want to read if you are trying to drop weight and improve your performance. And here is one for interval training for running. Check out the video below too to see interval training in action.

Now, these are probably not the only health myths you believe and we will certainly try to do our part in helping you discover the truth about staying healthy, but it the meanwhile beware!
