Living with stress is something that a lot of us geeks just have to deal with.
It’s not like we can quit our jobs or stop being in front of computers if we want to be able to support our families (not to mention get that kick ass PS3).
But there are a few things you can do to help reduce the stress in your life. In turn this will help with your overall health and vitality, give you a bit more energy, help any health program you are following and just result in slightly better overal quality of living.
So what are they?
1) Get Up 15 Minutes Earlier - the stress you experience in the morning can really ruin your day. By getting up earlier you make morning mishaps a lot easier to deal with and reduce the probability that they will affect your day.
2) Get Up and Stretch - for the love of God, this is so easy to do and almost none of us do it. Your neck and back get tired, but you push on through the pain? Hell know, take a lousy 30 seconds out of every 90 minutes to do a little stretching. This will vastly improve your overall sense of wellbeing, help you avoid those awful computer headaches, back cramps and also help your stress levels. So easy!
3) Write a “To Do List” - Simply having a list of things that you need to get done can really clear your mind and show you the path forward. Spending 5 minutes making a list of things that you need to get done in the morning can save you a ton of time during the working day and reduce your overall stress levels.
4) Halve Your Coffee Intake - drinking coffee puts caffeine in your body. Caffeine makes you stressed. Drink a juice instead of that second coffee or better yet have a nice big glass or bottle of water.
5) Wear Earplugs - working in a noisy environment can add to your stress levels significantly. A $2 pair of earplugs can be worth their weight in gold.
6) Take A Bath - Oh c’mon - you love a steaming hot bath as much as the next guy. And you know how relieving it can be after a stressful day at work.
7) Get Fit - physical fitness has been correlated to mental fortitude in a lot of studies. Translation? Fit people have a lower predisposition to stress.
8) Buy Some Clothes That Fit - Wearing loose fitting clothing is more comfortable. Wearing shoes that don’t constrict your feet is more comfortable. Physical comfort helps reduce stress. Ergo, get some comfy threads.
9) Join a Yoga Group - kind of along the same lines as “get fit” but there has been so much written about the stress benefits of Yoga that you must be living under a rock if you haven’t heard about them. They’re right.
10) Breath - Simple ain’t it? Stop what you are doing. Put everything down. Now take a big, deep breath.
Feels better, doesn’t it?
